I'd start with tutorials (Shaun Spalding and Friendly Comonaut were the two I found most helpful). He was one of the first people to start posting GMS2.3 tutorials and has continued to cover a lot of topics. I would add Matharoo to the recommended YouTube GML tutorial list. Spalding is still actively making tutorials, so as long as you stick to tutorials made within the last 8 or 9 months they should work with GMS2.3.x without requiring any adjustments. Once you're familiar enough with GameMaker/GML to make the necessary adjustments to update older code, his tutorials may be worth another look. When GMS2.3 released last summer, most/all of his tutorials broke. He hasn't made or updated a GameMaker video for like 3 years at this point. Heartbeast isn't a good recommendation for people that are just starting out anymore. The purpose of working through this selection of tutorials is to introduce you to the logic behind a variety of different game mechanics. Generally, the advice is to start with one of the Astroids clone (Space Rocks) tutorials, then move on to a single screen arcade style tutorial (maybe a Pac-Man clone or something), and then side scrolling platformer tutorial. When you code along with a tutorial, you should type everything out without ever copy and pasting anything - the repetition helps the information stick. Most people learn better from tutorials if they code along with them. The next gm(48) will take place on Oct 20, 2018.
